Well, here I am. Definitely not seeing a staircase, but taking a step. Gulp.
I often coach people on paying attention to what gives you energy. What you’re doing when you lose track of time. What you do effortlessly. The things that people thank you for. What makes you endlessly curious. They are all clues leading to what you should be doing more of. And when you follow those clues? More fulfillment. Greater impact. All the stuff we’re searching for in this life.
With a 90-day summer vacation (ie, furlough from my job) ahead of me, I decided to take my own advice and follow the clues. It led me here, to Rooted.
Cooking and nourishing those I love is my favorite thing, especially with food grown around me, or whatever the heck is in my pantry. A close second is reading, learning, and being inspired by what’s happening within my food community. At midnight, when I should be sleeping, this is what I’m doing – taking in the talents of local makers, farmers, advocates, chefs, and home cooks. I honor their craft, catch their sparks, and shine them into my life and onto my table.
So here I am, trying to light a spark for you. Hoping you’ll find inspiration to cook with what you have. To choose the foods that are grown or made around you. To celebrate the seasons and the foods they bring, and then say goodbye until they return next year. Most of all, I hope you come to understand why what we eat matters so much.
Cheers friends – to first steps, and many more after that.
